Raynham Hall is a haunted estate by the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England. The most famous ghost picture of all time was taken here in 1936.

Background[]

Raynham Hall is the long time property of Townshend family of Raynham. The estate is supposedly haunted by Dorothy Townshend who was abused by her husband Viscount Townshend in the early 1700s.

According to legend, Dorothy's husband Lord Townsend married her in 1713, then locked her in Raynham Hall. Lord Townshend supposedly buried her alive in 1726, locked up in the Hall where she would live the rest of her miserable years.

Haunting[]

Dorothy Townshend or the 'Brown Lady' is the ghost said to haunt Raynham Hall. Her appearance in the 1820s caused all the staff to permanently leave the property. In 1926 she was apparently seen on the oak staircase.

Ten years later in 1936 two professionals set up in Raynham Hall to see if they could get a picture of the ghost supposedly haunting the hall. During their visit they took the most famous ghost picture of all time showing the Brown Lady on the oak staircase in the main hall. Photography experts say the photograph is genuine and there is no explanation for the apparition.
